Born in Lévis, Québec, Anne-Frédérique Gagnon studied violin and electric guitar before
beginning her classical guitar studies in 2014. Holder of a diploma of collegial studies in guitar
from Cégep de SainteFoy, she also holds a bachelor’s degree in guitar performance from
Université Laval with honours from the Dean’s List of the Faculty of Music.
In 2020, she became the first French speaker to take part in the Alicante classical guitar
Master at the University of Alicante, Spain. There, she was taught by great classical guitar
masters, including David Russell, Roberto Aussel and Hopkinson Smith, among others. She
had the opportunity to perform in Canada, in the United States and in Spain, where she
played at the mythical Palacio del Portalet, a regular venue for great names in classical guitar,
including Francisco Tárrega and Trinidad Huerta.
Now back in Québec, Anne-Frédérique completed a Master’s degree in classical guitar
performance at Université Laval with Rémi Boucher (2021-2023), where the Faculty of Music
awarded her the Monique-Barry – Interpretation Scholarship. She then became the first
student to complete the advance training course at the Conservatoire de Saguenay, with
Pascal Valois (2023-2024).
Alongside her academic training, Anne-Frédérique regularly participates in festivals and
musical academies. She has received several scholarships from the Camp Musical du
Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean as well as from the Académie du Domaine Forget. Her curiosity
and desire to learn led her to perfect her skills with great guitar masters, such as Jason
Vieaux, Judicaël Perroy, Zoran Dukić, René Izquierdo, Lorenzo Micheli and Matteo Mela. In
2023, she plays in the guitar orchestra of the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA), under the
direction of Sérgio Assad and Ben Verdery. She stands out in competitions, winning prizes at
the Festival-Concours de musique de Sherbrooke (1st prize recital and 2nd prize concerto,
2023), the Domaine Forget International Competition (1st prize, 2022), the Festival-Concours
Pierre de Sorel (1st prize, 2022) and in the Canimex concerto competition of Université Laval
(2nd prize, 2022).
In 2023, Anne-Frédérique received a grant from the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du
Québec, enabling her to pursue her artistic development in Canada (Domaine Forget, Camp
musical du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean), the United States (Guitar Foundation of America,
Eastern music Festival) and Spain (Camino Artes). She also received a special prize from the
Quebec Symphony Orchestra Foundation on the occasion of the 2023 Quebec and
Chaudière-Appalaches Awards of Excellence in Arts and Culture Gala. Produced in
collaboration with François Couture, her first solo album , “Bridge”, was released in the fall of
2023 under the Disques BOGHEI records label.
