‘I Might Be Dreaming’ new album by Esbe at Peaceful Radio Internet Station

20 May 2022 Artists

Dreams can be mysterious and multi-layered, often leaving us
haunted by a particular emotion well after we have woken.
Inspired by thoughts that seem to hover between the night and
the reality of the day, I MIGHT BE DREAMING is the new album
from London composer and producer, Esbe. Atmospheric grooves
with Esbe’s signature orchestration create the perfect bedrock
for far-reaching vocals and lyrics which explore lost love, creative
ambitions, climate change and our delicate ecosystem, set within
some beautiful poetry from Esbe that gently questions the
nature of the human soul.
As with her previous albums, Esbe always uses strong visual
imagery when composing, resulting in sweeping filmic
orchestrations. This is perhaps most evident in the opening track, ‘Cry From The Soul’, and ‘A Lonely
Star’, in which Esbe envisioned the final glances from a tired but triumphant James Bond in the epic ‘No
Time To Die’ (2021, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/Eon Productions). Esbe has also drawn inspiration from the
jazz grooves and silky voices of Norah Jones and Laura Mvula, particularly for ‘Don’t Say Maybe’, a song
which implores us to draw confidence from our inner, motivating, voice, and fulfil our ambitions.
The song, ‘I Might Be Dreaming’, began the album’s journey with lyrics written as Esbe awoke early one
morning, as she focused on the perfect memory suspended in a dream she was slowly leaving behind.
Esbe’s nuanced production and love of Portishead is evident in its dreamy groove, a homage to their
style. Esbe’s critically acclaimed vocal melodies wrap themselves tenderly around lyrics of haunted love
on ‘No Desire’ and the desperation of unrequited love on a standout track, ‘I Needed You’ with its
memorable string riff and graceful vocals.

Esbe gives insight into what this new album means to her personally,
“I MIGHT BE DREAMING” is a collection of songs written within dreams. Each one unfolds – a beguiling
story, a fear, an aspiration – in the still of the night when we relinquish our hold on the day and follow
the dream… Each song is drawn from a personal experience. The soul is laid bare. Loves lost, aspirations,
fears for our planet in peril, and also the contemplations of something spiritual beyond our natural
lives.”

Esbe is a most modern artiste: composing, singing, producing and recording all her own albums. She is
in fact doubly blessed, both as a producer with dynamic vision, and as a recording artist. Since gaining a
Licentiate from London’s Royal Academy of Music where she won the prestigious Julian Bream Prize
For Guitar, Esbe’s creative output has been nothing short of phenomenal. Prolific in song output and
prolific in talent, I MIGHT BE DREAMING is Esbe’s seventh album since 2018.
On the album ‘Desert Songs’ (2018), Esbe chose a selection of 8th-13th century Middle Eastern poets
including the Sufi mystic poet, Rumi; while ‘Mystra – Songs from Byzantium’ was inspired by travels in
the Greek Peloponnese and Bulgaria. In 2019, Esbe composed and released two albums: ‘Ten Songs’
which she produced with multi-layered guitar, the one commissioned by her from luthier Alastair
McNeill, and ‘Far Away’, a collection of intimate songs for voice and solo guitar.
In 2020, Esbe released the 5-star album, ‘Saqqara’, a selection of songs inspired by travels to Egypt,
achieving radio airplay in the UK, Europe, Canada, USA and beyond. ‘Under Cover’, released in
September 2021, also quickly gathered high critical praise with its unusual foray into re-imagining some
very well-known songs. Among the many reviews for ‘Under Cover’, Music Mecca wrote “the lush
instrumentation creates a new dynamic… a dream-like soundscape around the lyrics.”
Having worked with musicians from India and North Africa, and with Eastern European roots, Esbe
embraces many musical and vocal influences as beautifully expressed on the inspired song ‘No Desire’, a
song of dark remembrance of past love. Esbe’s vocals shine brightly on ‘No Desire’ with its North African
melismatic embellishments.
Esbe raises some important topical questions regarding climate change and its consequences on I
MIGHT BE DREAMING. Esbe’s hypnotic vocal riff and signature layered harmonies on ‘Angry Sun’ urge us
to consider how our life-giving sun can bear to watch as we destroy the delicate ecosystem on our
beautiful blue planet.
The album’s closing song, ‘Restless’, accomplishes something quite spectacular as Esbe lyrically paints a
picture of a future dystopia while maintaining an alluring melody in the song’s chorus,
“There’ll be no more tomorrows if we don’t end this sorrow… there has to be something more for us to
believe…” The song asks us, if we don’t change how we live on this planet, what will the future be?
I MIGHT BE DREAMING is an accomplished album from Esbe: a multi-layered electronica dreamscape
which lingers long after listening, just like dreams and their afterthoughts. I MIGHT BE DREAMING
releases on 20th May 2022 through New Cat Records with distribution by Cadiz Music.
