Argentina is a land of striking geographical contrast: from the flowing Rio de la Plata in the north to the Andes that straddle the west and the arid plains of Patagonia in the south, a diversity that carries through to its varied musical traditions. LA DIABLERA is a fast-paced fifteen-track album that celebrates rural Argentinean folk music and dances from the rural towns and villages, in the ‘campo’, as performed by one of France’s leading folklore groups: La Típica Folklórica.

LA DIABLERA features carnival mask-makers, the Argentinean zamba – the folk dance that includes couples elegantly waving handkerchiefs while they gracefully circle each other – and a story from the vineyards on ‘La Geografia del vino’ (The Geography of wine). LA DIABLERA also has a song that celebrates the ‘El coyuyo y la tortuga’ or Argentinian cicada and the turtle. LA DIABLERA starts with an Argentinean folk dance, ‘Chacarera of the violin’, a dance that originated from the northerly province of Santiago del Estero.

The title track ‘La Diablera’ celebrates the tradition of mask-wearing to release the spirit of life during carnival time. ‘El diablero’ in Spanish is the name given to the carnival mask maker in the north-western province of Salta. The carnival’s opening ceremony takes place in the mountains, where a hole is dug in the ground to liberate the ‘diablo’, the devil. For the duration of the carnival, the mask-wearers activate the spirit of the ‘diablo’ or devil which in this instance, is a positive life-affirming spirit. At the end of the carnival, the procession goes back to the mountain to put the ‘diablo’ back in the ground, until the following year. Certain mask-wearers carry the spirit of the diablo throughout the carnival.

Launched in 2017 as a musical research project, La Típica Folklórica is a group of highly skilled, professional musicians from different backgrounds who record and perform together in France. Led by Argentinian musician (violin, guitar, voice & bombo) Alfonso Pacín, La Típica Folklórica first gathered around the tango and then, joined by their common interest for folk music they started to explore the expressive potential of the very traditional tango formation called ‘orquesta típica’ but within the folklore genre. La Típica Folklórica is one of the only groups in Europe to combine both genres in this way. On LA DIABLERA, there are all the elements of a traditional tango ‘orquesta típica’ comprising piano, double bass, strings and bandoneon with additional vocals, flute, Argentinean bombo drums. As La Típica Folklórica’s founder, Alfonso Pacin says,

“With the group La Tipica Folklorica, and on LA DIABLERA, I have found a way to express two unique musical expressions: the traditional tango band “La orquesta tipica” with piano, double bass, bandoneons and violins plus the rural musical Argentinean rhythms and songs, the folklore. Each song on LA DIABLERA has been carefully chosen, each one represents somehow a different variation of the Argentinean soul so to speak.”

LA DIABLERA contains fifteen shortish tracks and while most are instrumental, four songs feature Alfonso Pacin on vocals  including ‘Geografia del vino’ (Geography of wine), the song dedicated to the mountains of Portezuelo on ‘Recuerdos del Portezuelo’ (Memories of Portezuelo), ‘De estar estando’ (About being)  and the album’s title track ‘La Diablera’ (The devil maker). Several of the tracks on LA DIABLERA features the award-winning Argentinean bandoneon player, Milagros Caliva, including ‘Chacarera of the violin’.

LA DIABLERA was partially recorded between 2020-21 at the Parisian Conservatoire of Gennevilliers, an important place for tango and Argentinian music in France.  The album was released through the French label TAC Faubourg du Monde label which brings together renowned artists from the jazz scene, contemporary music, South American music, flamenco and also poetry collections. The label’s unique mission statement is “to bring together authors, poets, composers, performers, musicians around the same idea:  the journey through the twists and turns of world culture – source of all wealth.”

On LA DIABLERA,  La Típica Folklórica has proudly reformulated the pallets of timbres, harmonies and rhythms of the traditional tango orchestra, to go in search of the rural spirit of Argentine music as practised in towns and villages outside the cities in the ‘campo’, to reconnect with the ancient rhythmic roots of Latin American mestizo traditions. LA DIABLERA was originally released through France’s TAC Faubourg du Monde (Territory Art + Collection) both digitally and physically in 2021 with ongoing promotions.
