“EARTH SONGS” Liner Notes

The theme of “Earth Songs,” centers on the wonder, grandeur, intricacies, and harmony of nature, as well as man’s eternal connection with it. Each song musically depicts some facet of the natural world and man’s need to embrace it, protect it, and experience it in a profound, soul nurturing way.

  1. Transcendent Serenity – The inner peace found in communing with nature is one of the profound joys of life. Its calming effect on the spirit has existed since the beginning of time and this oasis of serenity will transcend time.

  1. Orenda – To the Haudenosaunee People, this word describes the collective power of nature’s energies through the living energy of all natural objects, both animate and inanimate.

  1. Soul Sanctuary – The chaos and stress of urban living negatively impacts the very wellbeing of our physical and mental health. It is the healing solitude to be found in nature that provides a sanctuary for the soul; a healing balm for all that ails us.

  1. Harmony – In nature, you will find the most intricate of relationships between flora, fauna, water, and sky. It is where the “Circle of Life” can be experienced in the most profound display of natural harmony.

  1. Mni Wiconi – In the language of the Lakota, it means, “Water is Life.” It is necessary for the existence of all living things and without it the very future of life is put into great peril.

  1. Unci Maka – Embedded in Native American tradition and culture is the understanding that it is their duty to care for Grandmother Earth – Unci Maka. They believe that the Earth is the mind of the people as the people are the mind of the earth.

  1. Dancing Sky – Lying on one’s back, staring up at the billowing white clouds dancing across an azure sky, one can’t help but be amazed at the overwhelming grandeur of it all and just how insignificant we are in the scheme of things.

  1. Living Cathedral – “There are no temples or shrines among us save those of nature. Being children of nature, we are intensely poetical. We would deem it sacrilege to build a house for the One who may be met face to face in the mysterious, shadowy aisles of the primeval forest, or on the sunlit bosom of virgin prairies, upon dizzying spires and pinnacles of naked rock and in the vast jeweled vault of the night sky!” – Charles Alexander, Ohiyesa, (Dakota Sioux)

  1. Solivagant – In Latin, it means to “wander alone” or “to be a lone wanderer.” Wandering in the magnificent, mysterious, and astonishing world of the wilderness, one can feel alone with themself or feel one with nature. The choice is one of perspective and wonder.

  1. Elysian – The Greeks use this word to describe something that is beautiful, creative, divinely inspired, peaceful and perfect. No other word comes close to describing Creation and all the miraculous wonders that surround us if we simply take the time to see them.

  1. Komorebi – A Japanese word describing the interplay of the light and the leaves when sunlight filters through the trees, specifically, it means the visible light rays.

  1. Shinrin Yoku – Coined in 1982 by Tomohide Akiyama, Director of the Japanese Forestry Agency, it can be literally translated as “forest bathing,” similar to “sunbathing” and “sea bathing.” It means to bathe in the environment of the forest, using all your senses to experience nature up close, and in doing so, reap the emotional and physical benefits.
