I never met David Darling in person; although, I met him many times while listening to his music.
Not only did we play the same instrument, but on a more profound level, we were diving for
the same pearls in our musical explorations.I recognized the mastery in his playing and the depth of his musical soul,
and felt a deep reverence with it.
When the phone call came from Mickey Houlihan, David’s longtime producer, with an ofer to work on some of
David’s unfnished pieces, I accepted without hesitation and an ethereal collaboration was born.
Every musical piece of this collection was started with deep introspection. David was a master like no other,
and I wanted to support, augment, and serve in the best way possible. Whenever I was facing the question of
how to develop one of his musical sketches, I would enter a silent dialogue with him,lay out my strategies,
and ask for permission.
When my vision was clear enough, permission seemingly was granted and my heart opened,
allowing me to proceed with the journey of augmenting and shaping a piece, often with some bold strokes,
to bring it into its current form. This process was partly analytic, partly intuitive, and always inspiring.
I am most grateful to have had this opportunity.
– Hans Christian

David was a true collaborator and inspired others in such relationships to bring forth their best eforts. He did this
with other musicians as well as authors, dancers and producers. For me personally, it was a a life changing course correction.
We met through Paul Winter and grew closer while rafting the Colorado River during one of Paul’s Grand Canyon recordings.
Those were exciting times on the river with everything constantly changing from the sun and water to the layers
of the earth revealed in the canyon itself. Exuberant with David’s creativity and the river experience,
I invited him to collaborate with author Barry Lopez in a recording of River Notes. I was unprepared for
how seriously he took the studio recording process. It was still fun but he was deeply committed to
an existential beauty and all of us involved were led to share in that commitment.
David was at his best when improvising and I learned to always be in the record mode when he was playing.
Sometimes the ideas became fully realized as part of larger projects and sometimes the musical ideas were left unfnished.
These seemingly unfnished ideas have now found a partner in Hans. I hold dear David’s commitment to beauty.
I was waiting to fnd another artist who could work from their own personal depth while honoring David’s music.
Hans has created a true collaboration with David as if meeting through time and space
with a shared understanding of the eternal.
– Mickey Houlihan

DAVID DARLING

1941-2021

From teaching students, to directing orchestras, to performing on stage,
David’s musical endeavors have touched many. Exploring Jazz, Brazilian,
African and Indian music, David’s diverse musical expressions
ripple unfettered by genre or convention.
As a Grammy Award–winning cellist, composer, teacher, and collaborator,
Darling redefned how the cello is played and how music is taught.
An innovative improviser, he draws on classical,
country, jazz, rock, new age, and world music to create compositions
that tap deep into listeners’ souls and through which listeners can bring to life
their own stories, meaning, and consciousness.
David’s creative approach centers on deep listening – fnding a seed
of a musical element on which to build until the composition fnds its way into being.
Also informing Darling’s work was his deeply held belief that music
is for everyone and is an essential creative expression with social and spiritual power.
Throughout his long and varied career, which began in 1966, he inspired thousands
through workshops and seminars to explore their musical talents.
In 1986 David co-founded Music for People, an international nonproft network
dedicated to teaching and fostering music improvisation
as a means of creative self-expression.
Darling’s recordings and achievements are many from his time with
the Paul Winter Consort in 1970’s and to his later recordings for the ECM
and Hearts of Space Labels. His long time collaborations with producer,
Mickey Houlihan on the Wind Over The Earth and Curve Blue labels
included projects with writers, dancers, and flmmakers.
Darling’s Prayer for Compassion, was the winner of the 2010 Grammy for Best New Age Album.

HANS CHRISTIAN

Throughout his life as a composer, performer and producer,
German born Hans Christian has been inspired to come up with music
that induces introspection, soul meditation and melancholic passion.
The cello has served perfectly as his voice of expression and it has spoken
in so many diferent ways since his frst release of original music in 1988.
Starting out at age nine as a student of classical music
Hans soon developed an interest in music that went beyond the classical repertoire.
He was drawn to free improvisation, especially in his father’s Gothic church,
where the acoustics of the church played an important role in developing his musical ear.
As a fourteen year old, Hans also started playing the bass guitar and continued to develop
as a musician on both instruments. In 1982 he moved from Hanover, Germany
to Hollywood, USA to study at Musicians Institute and pursue a career as a musician
in the Los Angeles music scene, eventually performing and recording with a variety of top level artists.
A persistent drive to fnd his own musical language led him to dive ever more into cello improvisations and his early performances
included dance, light projections, and live looping. He rapidly developed a unique voice for the cello in his compositions that combined
neo-classical, ethnic, and ambient/electronic elements. As a co-founder of the Indian inspired duo RASA, he released six CDs on the
Hearts Of Space and New Earth Records labels and continues to share new compositions through his label, Allemande Music.
While deepening his own musical journey, Hans also developed a talent as recording engineer and producer.
Over the past three decades he has worked on countless recording projects with independent
artists from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
Hans currently resides in Door County, Wisconsin.

Fantastic and thank you, Benno. Your show is one of the first to premier this new CD which is as much an ethereal collaboration as a final milestone in David Darling’s recording career. Enjoy!
